The "Bubblegum Troll Crisis" project was inspired by competitor videos and opened with a real-life environment featuring a person, followed by a blend of 2D and 3D animation. The project aimed to create a reusable spine rig for the Bubblegum Troll character and to test different user-generated content (UGC) intros, using both male and female actors.
As a project co-lead, I developed the approach and managed stakeholder expectations during review sessions. Our biggest challenge was seamlessly integrating the three elements: the real-life environment, 2D characters, and 3D backgrounds. We tackled this by adding additional camera movements in Blender and using points to track these moves in After Effects. Matching shadows and lighting between the 3D environment and the 2D characters and Bubblegum Troll added depth and helped us achieve a cohesive, seamless look.
